Write-off rules for caravans and trailers
Each state keeps its own written-off vehicle rules, and not all of them take in a towed caravan or trailer. Each rule below is what that state's law or transport agency says, with its source and the date it was read.
New South Wales
In NSW the written-off vehicle rules cover light trailers and light caravans up to 15 years old, light meaning a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4.5 tonnes or less. A written-off light vehicle cannot be re-registered in NSW except in limited cases, and only if it has none of the damage in the statutory write-off assessment criteria: the applicant was its registered operator for more than 28 days before the damage, inherited it from that operator, or is the same registered operator and the damage is hail only.

Victoria
In Victoria the written-off vehicle rules apply to light motor vehicles, and the register holds those up to 15 years old. A towed caravan or camper trailer is a trailer, not a motor vehicle, under the Road Safety Act 1986, so it is not on the Victorian register.

Queensland
Queensland's written-off vehicle scheme covers caravans, camper trailers and heavy trailers that are 16 years old or younger when they become a total loss; a light trailer under 4.5 tonnes that is not a caravan or camper trailer is not covered. A repairable write-off can be re-registered after a safety certificate inspection and a written-off vehicle inspection (WOVI); a statutory write-off cannot be re-registered in Australia.

Western Australia
In Western Australia a written-off trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum rated capacity of 4,500 kg or less, made within the last 15 years, must be notified, and WA law describes a caravan as a trailer fitted for human habitation on a journey. A repairable write-off may be repaired and relicensed if it meets every inspection and licensing requirement; a statutory write-off can never be relicensed.

Tasmania
Tasmania's written-off vehicle rules apply to a vehicle with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or less that is under 15 years old, and a trailer, which takes in a towed caravan, is a vehicle under the Vehicle and Traffic Act 1999. A repairable write-off is a vehicle that is not a statutory write-off but has been assessed as a total loss, and only when that assessment falls within 15 years of its date of manufacture.

Australian Capital Territory
In the ACT a trailer with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or less, which the law says includes a caravan, is a notifiable vehicle when it is written off within 15 years of manufacture. A statutory write-off cannot be registered, and a repairable write-off is registered only if it is the original vehicle, was registered in the ACT when it was written off and meets the vehicle standards.

Northern Territory
In the Northern Territory the Register of Written-off Vehicles holds vehicles other than trailers, and a towed caravan is a trailer under the Motor Vehicles Act 1949, so a written-off caravan or trailer is not on the NT register.
