Tow match: caravans your vehicle can tow
Enter your vehicle’s braked towing capacity and, if you know it, its towball download limit. We show the caravans, campers and trailers whose ATM sits within it.
Sign in to save your tow rating, and every ad within it shows “Within your tow rating”.
How the match works
We compare your towing capacity with each van’s ATM as its seller states it. A van shows when its ATM is at or under your capacity. Add a towball limit and we also leave out the vans whose stated ball weight is above it, and the vans whose seller did not give one. Motorhomes, campervans and slide-on campers are not towed, so they never show in this search.
Why we match on ATM, not tare
Tare is the van empty, as it left the factory. ATM, the aggregate trailer mass, is the most the van may weigh fully loaded. Water, gas, food and gear add weight to every trip, so a van matched on its tare can be over your capacity once it is packed. Matching on ATM keeps the van within your rating however you load it, up to its own limit. Where a seller gives both figures, the ad shows the payload, ATM less tare, so you can see how much you can carry.
Ball weight and your towball limit
Ball weight is the load the van’s coupling puts on your towball. It changes with how the van is packed: weight in front of the axles adds to it. Your vehicle has its own towball download limit, and the van’s loaded ball weight needs to stay within it.
Check your own vehicle and the van
- Your vehicle’s braked towing capacity and towball download limit are in its owner’s handbook; the maker can confirm them for your exact model and its fitted options.
- Your towbar carries its own rating, which can be lower than the vehicle’s. Use the lowest of the figures.
- Your vehicle also has a gross combination mass (GCM): the most the loaded vehicle and the loaded van may weigh together. A vehicle full of people and gear can reach it before the van reaches your towing capacity.
- The weights in our ads are the sellers’ own. Check the compliance plate on the van before you buy, and weigh the loaded rig before a long trip.
