Want a bed that is made up when you arrive and a van small enough to follow you down a bush track? This page lists hybrid campers for sale from private owners and dealers. A hybrid sits between a camper trailer and a caravan: a hard body you can live in, with beds or a roof section that fold or slide out once you have parked.
If you own a camper trailer, a hybrid means less canvas to pitch at every stop. If you own a caravan, it can mean something shorter that goes further off the bitumen.
The guide below the listings covers how hybrid layouts differ, the weight figures to read on every ad and the brake rules that change as a trailer gets heavier. It finishes with a used hybrid inspection list.
How a hybrid camper is built
There is no official definition of a hybrid. The word describes a layout, and builders use it for quite different trailers. In general a hybrid pairs a solid body and a kitchen that is ready to cook in with sleeping space that grows once the camper is set up.
Slide-out and fold-out beds
A popular design slides a bed out of one or both ends of the body, with a fabric cover over each. You get a long bed in a short trailer, at the cost of fabric that needs to dry before it is packed away for long. Check how the bed ends are supported and whether the cover zips cleanly.
Pop top hybrids and expanders
Some hybrids add a roof that lifts for standing room, and some builders sell hybrid models with a pop top. Others call their fold-out designs expanders, and on Caravan Domain those sit on their own page of expander campers for sale. If you want a full-height van with a raising roof and no fold-out beds, look at our pop top caravans for sale.
Where the kitchen lives
Some hybrids put the kitchen on a slide-out drawer outside the body, so cooking happens under the awning. Others fit a small internal kitchen as well. Think about where you camp: an outside kitchen is pleasant on a dry evening and less so in wind and rain.
Hybrid ranges in our make index come from builders such as MDC, Cub, Jawa, Ezytrail and Track Trailer, and from Jayco and JB Caravans 5. The MDC hybrid campers and caravans page lists that maker's ads whenever one is for sale.
Weights on a hybrid ad
Light is the point of a hybrid, so the weights on the ad deserve a careful read. Every towable ad on Caravan Domain carries the ATM, and the seller can add the tare, ball weight and GTM.
In the WA Department of Transport's Safe Towing Guide, the ATM is the maximum the trailer may weigh as specified by its manufacturer, and the load you may carry is the ATM less the tare 2. A light trailer does not always come with a generous payload. A hybrid with a low tare and a low ATM can run out of payload once the water tanks are full, so read both figures together.
The ball weight matters on a short trailer. The WA guide says the tow hitch download should be within the figure in your vehicle's owner's manual and on the tow bar's identification plate, and that the download can be checked by weighing the trailer at the coupling point 2. It also notes that both too much and too little download reduce the stability of the combination 2.
Brakes change as the trailer gets heavier
Hybrids span a wide range of weights, and the trailer brake rules step up with the trailer's Gross Trailer Mass. Transport for NSW sets out the steps on its page about towing a trailer or caravan 1:
- up to 750 kg GTM, no brakes are required, but any brakes fitted must comply 1
- from 751 kg to 2,000 kg GTM, an efficient braking system on both wheels of at least one axle 1
- from 2,001 kg to 4,500 kg GTM, an efficient braking system on all wheels 1
- over 2.0 tonnes GTM, an automatic breakaway system in case the trailer comes off the vehicle 1
ADR 38/05, the national standard for trailer brakes, allows over-run brakes only on trailers with a GTM of up to 2 tonnes 3. If a hybrid you are looking at has over-run brakes, check its GTM against that limit.
The same NSW page has a rule worth knowing: if the vehicle maker has not specified a maximum towing mass, the limit is one and a half times the tow vehicle's unladen mass, and only when the trailer's brakes are connected and working 1. If your handbook gives a figure, that figure is the one to use.
Matching a hybrid to your vehicle
If you already own the tow vehicle, work from it outwards:
- Find the towing capacity and the tow ball limit in the handbook and on the tow bar plate.
- Compare them with the hybrid's ATM and ball weight, and remember that the lowest rating in the chain is the one that counts 1.
- Add the people, fuel and gear in the vehicle to the ball weight and check the vehicle's GVM.
Our tow-match tool does the second step for you across every towable listing, using the figures you enter. Licences matter as well. In NSW, P1 licence holders can only tow small trailers with up to 250 kg of unloaded weight, and learners cannot tow at all 1.
Inspecting a used hybrid camper
A hybrid has more moving parts than a caravan of the same size. Set it up fully when you inspect it and time how long that takes. Packing it away again tells you just as much.
Canvas, vinyl and zips
Unroll every cover. Hold the fabric up to the light for pinholes, look for mould spots in the folds and run every zip from end to end. Ask whether the canvas has been reproofed, and look at the stitching where the fabric meets the body.
Slides and mechanisms
Run each bed slide and the kitchen drawer in and out. They should move smoothly without the body flexing. Look at the runners for bends, check the locking pins, and look underneath for cracked brackets.
Underneath the body
Plenty of hybrids in our make index are built for off-road use 5. Check the chassis and suspension for cracks and repairs, the drawbar for dents and the coupling for wear. Ask when the wheel bearings and brakes were last serviced. The WA guide says those parts must all be kept in good working order on any trailer you tow 2.
Papers
Match the VIN to the registration papers and run a PPSR search before you pay. Check the weights plate against the ad, and ask for any certificates the seller has for the LPG and electrical systems.
Selling a hybrid camper on Caravan Domain
Private ads cost $23 a month for Basic or $35 a month for Premium, and you can cancel at any time. You can upgrade a Basic ad to Premium at any time and pay only the difference for the rest of the month. A Bump puts the ad back at the top of the results once for $9, or $19 for five.
Hybrid buyers want to see the camper set up. Photograph it packed for travel and fully opened. In the description, list the weights from the plate and the bed sizes, and say how long setup takes. List your hybrid camper with photos of the slides and canvas in good light.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hybrid camper?
It is a trailer that combines a hard caravan-style body with beds or living space that slide or fold out once you stop. Builders use the name for a range of designs, so read each ad's layout and setup description rather than relying on the word. Compare hybrids with camper trailers and pop tops before you decide.
Are hybrid campers lighter than caravans?
Some are and some are not, so compare the plates rather than the category. The ATM on the weights plate is the most the hybrid may weigh loaded, and the ATM less the tare is what you can carry 2. Weigh the camper fully packed before a big trip.
Does a hybrid camper need brakes?
That depends on its GTM. In NSW a trailer up to 750 kg GTM needs none, one from 751 kg to 2,000 kg needs brakes on both wheels of at least one axle, and one over 2,000 kg needs brakes on all wheels and a breakaway system 1.
Can a P plater tow a hybrid camper?
In NSW a P1 driver can tow only small trailers with up to 250 kg of unloaded weight, and learner drivers cannot tow at all 1. Compare that figure with the tare on the hybrid's plate. Other states set their own rules, so check with the transport authority where your licence was issued.
Can I sleep in a hybrid while it is being towed?
How do I check whether my car can tow a hybrid?
Read the towing capacity and ball weight limit in your handbook and on the tow bar plate, then compare them with the hybrid's ATM and ball weight 2. The lowest rating applies. The Caravan Domain tow-match tool filters the towable listings by those two figures.
